Old Quebec City…UNESCO gem!
Quebec City celebrated its 400th Anniversary in 2008. Capital of the province of Quebec, it is in this unique city where French civilization first took hold in Canada. UNESCO in 1985 designated Quebec City a World Heritage Site. From Carnival — the largest winter carnival in the world — to the Quebec City Summer Festival, there is every reason for the city celebrations to party on!
Quebec City, in Canada’s largest province, Quebec, is North America’s only walled city with nearly five kilometers of stone walls from 1690. Old Quebec is named after the Algonquin word meaning “where the river narrows”. Massive archways and fortification encircle the historic section of Old Quebec City. The only thing old-fashioned about the city is the sense of security in walking the cobblestone streets from the 17th and 18th centuries. The city was built atop a steep rocky bluff overlooking the St. Lawrence River in hopes of dissuading invaders by sea or by land. Even after walled fortification, the city fell in 1759 during the Seven Years’ War on the Plains of Abraham where the armies of Montcalm and Wolfe fought to the death. Lord Dufferin, governor general in the 1870s, proclaimed the walls that surround Old Quebec not to be dismantled but retained, cementing to this day the city as one of the world’s most popular European-style cultural attractions.

Old Quebec City is divided between Upper Town and Lower Town. Around almost every corner of the narrow streets is a sophisticated sidewalk café and delectable restaurant offering up traditional Quebecois fare. Restaurant L ‘Echaude for lunch offers sea scallops, duck and gourmet salads and many more dishes in a stylish French cafe ambiance with a few tables outside where you can watch the many passers-by.
Museums and nightlife coexist in this area. Both areas are serviced by complimentary tourist shuttle buses from some of the hotels, but not throughout the year. Taxi cabs are clean and my experience has been that the drivers are friendly and many speak excellent English. If you’re interested in improving your French…hop in a cab and explore the possibilities of language and Old Quebec on the colourful streets and in the unique dining spots.
Another way to access both Upper Town and Lower Town is to take a ride on the funicular that operates on rails at an angle of 45 degrees between the two street levels. To get to the funicular in Lower Town use the 16, rue du Petit-Champlain entrance—near Place-Royale. Place Royale is the oldest historical district dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
This area eventually leads to the historic Port area where luxury cruise ships and ocean liners such as the Queen Mary 2 hole up on the St. Lawrence. The Musee de la Civilization has an open rooftop garden ideal for both adults and children to do a bit of digging in the dirt. The free bus shuttle stops at the front door.
In the Old Port area is where you’ll see the Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at Espace each day from 10:am to 9:pm until August 22, 2010. You may wish to buy a ticket to the Titanic exhibition as early as possible. The ferry to Levis is here in the port district, too. The ferry takes about five minutes to travel from Old Quebec City to Levis. On the other side you’ll find a tiny outdoor one-armed joint to get great poutine — French fries and fresh cheese curd smothered in brown gravy.
In Upper Town, the entrance to the funiculaire is on the Dufferin Terrace overlooking the St. Lawrence River near the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. The Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac offers one of the best vantage points for viewing the St. Lawrence. Certain sections of ground near the hotel are under archeological excavation with free tours offered. There is a lot of space in and around the Fairmont to get a good sense of location. Don’t forget to get an ice cream and stock up on pure maple syrup and purchase perfect gift items.
One of the best examples of a fortification archway is from St-Louis Gate in Upper Town. Spectacular views of the St. Lawrence River may be viewed along the paths from the ramparts. You can tour the ramparts, too. Behind the fortification is the recreation of Quebec’s 400-year history. Porte St. Jean dates to 1694 and rebuilt in 1939 due to unstable stone. Both archways have been rebuilt. Museums offer multimedia exhibitions, artifacts, historical monuments, live interpretative centers and a model city built to scale. If you want to see how the military high brass enjoyed their meals you’ll see a beautiful dining room table set with lovely china, silver and glass. The morning I toured the fortification freshly baked bread samples were offered. The aroma was delicious. The Citadelle du Quebec is close to the St-Louis Gate area and offers guided tours. This area offers an old French powder magazine (1750) and a former military prison (1840) and changing of the guard daily from June 24 to September. http://bit.ly/NacFJD

in Upper Town; it’s about a ten minute stroll along narrow, café-lined streets to the St-Louis Gate. The tourist shuttle bus is just across the street from hotel Manoir Victoria. Take a horse-drawn carriage through the St-Louis Gate if you prefer. The area around the hotel is perfect for long walks up and down gently sloping streets, shopping, restaurants, and sightseeing. Befitting an historic city, the hotel dates from the early 1830’s. Millions of dollars have been spent in renovations. In the spacious lobby you’ll see large armoires, plush leather sofas, paintings on high-ceiling walls and an out-of-the way backstreet entrance to Le Saint-James bistro open until 1: am weekends. The hotel has indoor parking, fine dining, business centre, spa, indoor pool and sauna, free wireless high speed Internet access in the room, and what I like best— room service. I enjoyed in the hotel’s dining room a Quebec-style breakfast…maple-syrup infused pork and beans, luscious fresh fruits and local cheeses, croissants piled high, eggs to order, and bacon and sausages. But the famous Quebec maple syrup is the prize of the lot. The area is quiet, ideal for family visits, solo travelers, and honeymooners. Jean-Lesage International Airport is 13 kilometres. Bike trails offer exciting views within the city along the waterfront in the port district; but, if you want to travel outside the city there are easy-access bike trails to rural areas where you’ll find the Montmorency Falls with a gondola to the top of the falls (restaurant at the top) – all within a 40-minute bike ride from Old Quebec City.

June to September for the next four years (last free showing, June 23 – Sept. 1, 2013) The Image Mill visual projection performance takes hold of the Port area in Lower Town once night falls. The free performance set to avant-garde music against a canvas of towering cement silos on the waterfront is the brainchild of artist extraordinaire Robert Lepage and Ex Machina. A ten minute bus ride from the Port area to the trendy Saint Roch district is the Cirque du Soleil street performance held Wednesday to Sunday evenings throughout the summer until the 6th of September. Special adaptations will be presented over the next three summers especially designed for Quebec City. The performance is a colossal extravaganza of costumed street performers heralded by sound effects and lights as they make their way throughout the streets beneath the Dufferin Montmorencyhighway underpass to a huge outdoor stage. Children and adults gather on a grassy knoll to watch the 60 to 90-minute spectacle. I was spellbound for the entire performance and still marvel that the show is absolutely free. – a contemporary boutique hotel ten minutes’ walk from Dufferin Montmorency — is ideal for taking in the Cirque show. Conde Nast Traveller listed Pur in their 2009 Hot List. This place is full of twenty-something travellers, the neighbourhood trendy and full of affordable and hip restaurants, lively cafes, shopping, a movie house, and public bus stop around the corner from the hotel. Contemporary minimalistic-styled room, free Internet in the hotel lobby and free gourmet coffee from a high-tech machine to serve your java just the way you like it – 24-7! I enjoyed gourmet French pastry, fresh fruits, croissant, cheeses and delicious coffee bedside for breakfast before hitting the fitness centre with pool. Hotel Pur is my idea of a great spot for a girlfriend’s getaway because its location is close to many of the best attractions. If you like oysters and martinis try Versa Restaurant at 432 rue du Parvis west, almost around the corner from the hotel.

Old Quebec City is truly a remarkable city—and walkable. Quebec architects made use of their fine sense of line and appreciation of the city’s founding fathers in modern application for heritage buildings. People live, work and enjoy life in the old quarter and welcome visitors with open arms. Permanent and travelling exhibitions in the city’s large and small museums you will see nowhere else make a visit to Old Quebec City a cherished lesson in history.

The city of Montreal, Quebec – once known by its Iroquoian 16th century name Hochelaga or “beaver dam”, is a few hours’ drive by automobile from Quebec City, or simply sit back and enjoy the passing view while travelling VIA Rail train service. Explorer Jacques Cartier arrived in the fall of 1535 on his journey to survey the new world. One or two days in each city makes for a wonderful cultural experience. The Fairmont Queen Elizabeth hotel is adjacent the VIA and AMTRK train station in Montreal. Use the Bonaventure Metro station. I find this glamorous hotel ideal for a quick shopping/sightseeing sojourn in the city. One of my favourite beauty lines is carried by the hotel and in all rooms: Miller Harris, London, England. The hotel was made famous yet again when John Lennon of Beatles fame and Yoko Ono held their “bed in” demonstration. You can sleep in the very room. Everything is at your fingertips when at the Fairmont, from award winning casual and fine dining, and the 50,000 square feet of meeting space, to the spa with indoor pool facilities. And when you walk out the front door of the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth you are in the heart of the city. Walk in any direction and you’ll come up against fascinating little corners of intrigue, from churches, to award winning office towers to bustling cafes and underground shopping emporiums. The hotel has a four Green Keys Eco rating, and is the 2010 Sustainable Grand Prix Quebec Tourism Award winner.

I walked from my hotel – Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth – along Rene-Levesque Blvd West through the downtown business section uphill towards Mount Royal and McGill University. In September when I visited the area was full of excitement with students finding their way around the university grounds perhaps for the first time. After McGill I walked to Sherbrooke Street West, a major cross street where you’ll find small art galleries and cafes. The area around Sherbrooke Street West is known as the Golden Triangle. city location before visiting various churches and museums. It felt so good to have my tired feet massaged after walking all day. Tip: the view of downtown Montreal and Mount Royal from Spa-Eastman’s high floor is fabulous. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is on Sherbrooke Street West. Hotel Sofitel http://bit.ly/RpYZQd is on historic Sherbrooke Street West and is a ten minute walk past art galleries and cafes to the museum/art gallery. Until August 29, 2010 there is the story of how Cirque du Soleil inspired the House of Boucheron to create a collection of luxury jewellery. The McCord Museum of Canadian History is just down the street at 690 Sherbrooke Street West from Spa-Eastman. Dream Weavers reveals the costumes of Cirque du Soleil until October 11, 2010. At the end of the day fill up on oysters and wine at Liverpool House adjacent to the Atwater Market (fresh produce farmer’s market) on Notre-Dame Street where Mercedes and Audi luxury automobiles and the odd scooter jockey for space amongst antique shops. Chefs David McMillan and Frédéric Morin also own Joe Beef on the same street. Check out their award-winning cookery book, The Art of Living According to Joe Beef. You cannot set foot in Montreal and not pull up a stool in Schwartz’s smoked meat parlor (deli for those of you who are traditionalists) for a Reuben sandwich. All pies, both fruit, vegetable but especially pork pies are worth the wait in line to purchase…whether you’re in Old Quebec City at the farmer’s outdoor market (marché du Vieux-Port de Quebec) down in the Port district of Old Quebec City or in Montreal. Cirque du Soleil begins its second-year (2010) of a five-year large-scale free street performance in June until September to celebrate their twenty-five-year anniversary. Cirque troupe will roam the Old Quebec City streets in the trendy Saint-Roch neighbourhood at Place Desjardins beneath the Dufferin-Montmorency Highway underpass with Les Chemins Invisibles (theme changes each year) five nights per week. This spectacle with 100 circus artists from the Quebec City circus school and Cirque du Soleil will be part of the largest street festival in Canada with many other free and ticketed arts events in Old Quebec City.
